Chapter 84 Friday August 26, 2022 as we rounded the corner to our street Stephen wasn’t out on Maria’s porch waiting for us. Zachary says ‘Something is off this isn’t right where is he?’ As we get out of the truck I can hear laughing and splashing coming from the back of my house. Zachary grabs the mail as I carry the lunch totes and gym bags as we enter the deck we get a ‘Hi Papa Hi Zachary.’ Stephen is swimming with DJ at the same time they say ‘Get changed and come swimming.’ I tell them we will be right out. The past month of August the temp hasn’t been lower than 84 and we have only had four days of rain and it has been at night. With all this heat and humidity my garden is doing great and my pool has gotten a good workout. Inside I clean out the lunch totes and Zachary empties the gym bags and we strip off out work clothes so they can og in the wash too. I rub his ass as we go upstairs to get into our swim trunks. He laughs and says ‘I guess no sex till Sunday night.’ I just moan I love my grandsons but I do need a release it has been a long week. We go outside and Stephen again is peeing off the side of the deck and he gets the hose and washes the edge of the deck and then his hands and the front of his suit. I will ask him in bed tonight whose idea was this. The water feels good and I ask ‘What’s up grandsons? Where are Eric and Stuart?’ DJ answers ‘Papa it has been a long week but I feel good and strong but I’m glad double sessions are over. The Gatorade really has helped.’ Stephen face beamed. I look at Stephen and he says ‘Nothing I had breakfast went to see Noni had lunch with her and went with Mom to pick up DJ.’ I ask again ‘And your brothers.’ Stephen giggles and DJ says ‘Papa they went over some girl’s house to swim along with Ian and Jared.’ Stephen starts making kissing noises. I look at him and say ‘You better stop that will be you someday.’ He moans ‘Papa they bother me now.’ Zachary says ‘When you start hanging out with girls they will gang up on you.’ Stephen says ‘Ewww girls I’m not hanging out with them.’ Zachary says ‘You say that now but you are young.’ Stephen says ‘Nope I’m moving in with Papa by that time you and DJ will be married.’ DJ says ‘Or you can live me.’ Stephen says ‘Okay.’ I look and smile at DJ he is a good kid. I ask ‘Who is staying for supper?’ They both say in unison ‘Me.’ I ask ‘Are you all set for school do you need anything?’ Stephen says ‘Another year off.’ I roared. DJ and Zachary look at him in disbelief. Stephen says ‘What? I heard Mom say that to Noni this morning that she wished I was home another year. So school must be bad.’ I say ‘Look at me have I or DJ, Zachary or anyone else ever lie to you?’ He says ‘Eric and Stuart.’ I laugh ‘You know what I mean. School will be fun. Trust me.’ Stephen moans again ‘Mom has been making us go to bed early and get up early.’ Zachary says ‘How much earlier than when you go to bed here?’ DJ answers ‘We are all in bed for eight.’ Zachary says ‘That’s nothing you are sleeping here that early sometimes and you usually get up early too.’ Stephen asks ‘Papa what are we having for supper?’ I answer ‘What would you guys like?’ There was silence. Then DJ says ‘Papa you know I miss your waffles. Can we have waffles, eggs, and bacon, ham or sausage?’ I say ‘You know that isn’t a bad idea. I haven’t made waffles in a long time I should use up the ham steaks in the freezer and I do have eggs.’ The other two say ‘Okay.’ Then Stephen says ‘I want corn on the cob tomorrow with whatever we are having.’ I laugh ‘Okay.’ DJ tells us all his games are on Friday nights except maybe Thanksgiving. Zachary says ‘The away team might not have their field ready by then and the field they have been using the past two years may be in use.’ DJ says ‘We may be playing the Friday or Saturday before Thanksgiving if that is the case. Our first game is September 23 at 7:15.’ I say ‘We will be there.’ DJ says ‘The first JV game is Monday the 26 at three in the afternoon. I tell him I will be there for the home games we may not be able to make the away games. Zachary says ‘But Mario will be there him and the guys from the club go to all the games.’ I ask again ‘Is there anything you need for school? DJ says ‘No I’m good. My Dad got me new spikes for the games.’ Zachary and I both say ‘Start breaking them in.’ Stephen says ‘Yeah and he must have a million of those underwear things he wears so he can fart with no clothes to hold the smell in.’ Zachary looks confused. I say ‘Athletic supporters I got him a few while he was staying here.’ Stephen cracks up ‘Athletic supporters sound like they are people.’ Zachary says ‘What about the cups?’ By this time DJ is smirking ‘I got two that is enough I can’t wear them for long.’ Zachary agrees ‘I never wore them so I have two if you ever need them.’ Stephen is busy swimming around without a clue as to what they are talking about. I suddenly realize and say ‘Stephen it is your birthday Wednesday. Are you having a party? Stephen says ‘It is also the first day of school. No party we are going to have one next Saturday or Sunday. It is going to be a double party for DJ and me.’ Zachary says ‘You are going to be 5 right and DJ 15? Stephen says ‘Yeah.’ DJ says ‘The day I turned 10 my Mom came home with baby Stephen. I hoped that he would grow up to be just like me.’ Stephen says ‘Did you?’ DJ says ‘Yeah I did I needed someone to pick my dirty socks and jocks up.’ Stephen splashed and says ‘Not funny.’ DJ hugged him and whispers ‘I couldn’t have asked for better brother.’ Zachary and I turned as not to embarrass them but my chest was pumped out with pride for what DJ said.’ I say ‘In that case DJ picked out supper tonight you can choose tomorrow night’s supper and the both of you Sunday’s breakfast.’ Stephen says ‘Let me think I know I want corn on the cob for sure.’ I got out of the pool and the boys were going home to shower and change. Stephen squawked but he realized because the weather was still hot Andrea wanted the shorts and shirts he had here home ot be used for school all I had was pajamas. Actually there were a pair of shorts and tank here but this way Zachary and I can shower together!! After a long satisfying shower where we both got off I started supper. Zachary finished up laundry and set the island for us. Zachary asks ‘Where are your presents for Stephen?’ I laughed and say ‘I haven’t gotten him anything yet with you and DJ getting all the obvious I’m kind of stumped.’ Zachary says ‘Give him The Walton dvds I got. Between the jacket and The Santa Clause Trilogy that is more than enough.’ I say ‘Okay that is good or you can save them as stocking stuffers don’t wrap them for me yet.’ Then it hit me and I say to Zachary get on your laptop I’m going to get him winter jackets, a snow suit and boots. I think DJ is going to get money, gift cards, and a hunting outfit.’ Zachary looked at me and I say ‘A snow suit that he can wear hunting if he decides to go.’ Zachary laughed and says ‘I probably can use help hauling those deer out of the woods.’ Tomorrow Anthony and I will hit Cabela’s to get DJ’s one- piece snow suit and I may be to get Stephen something there too. The boots I should be able to get in BJ’s maybe for both boys. Zachary looked up jackets and he showed me a Levi’s denim and corduroy jacket with the sheep skin lining and collars like I had when I was a kid. If he wears a hoodie with any of these he should be warm and look cool at the same time. I got him one of each faded blue denim and a deep wine corduroy. Now hats I got them all hats too all Northface the gloves I will let Andrea get. All that will be at the store Tuesday and we can get after work or I can run out at lunchtime. Zachary reminded me that Noni had two ski jackets of his that were big this past winter on him and he may be able to wear them this year so don’t buy any tomorrow. I had broiled 4 ham steaks and was starting on the batter for the waffles. It took no time to make them and put them in the oven to keep warm as I was finishing up I heard the two of them laughing on the back porch. They came in and told me there were cucumbers and tomatoes on the table outside from Mario. Stephen says ‘Papa I want tomato and cucumber salad and corn on the cob but not sure what else yet.’ I answer ‘You got to tomorrow at breakfast to decide.’ Stephen says ‘Oh Papa I have to go to the dentist tomorrow. DJ and I are going. Stuart and Eric have to go Monday. I have to leave right after breakfast. But I will be back for lunch.’ I ask ‘What time is your appointment?’ DJ says ‘We are first at 8:30.’ I say to Stephen that is okay I have to do something with Uncle Anthony in the morning and will be back at lunch myself.’ I asked ‘Who wants eggs on their waffles and what kind?’ Stephen says ‘What kind only the ones with the yolks!’ I ask ‘Alright how many?’ Stephen says one and the other two say they want two. I made six over easy and didn’t lose one. They got their waffles ready waiting for the eggs. Stephen says ‘DJ this was a good idea I like breakfast for supper sometimes.’ Stephen asks ‘Where are you going with Uncle Anthony?’ I tell him we have to go look at some clothes for hunting. I look at DJ and say ‘Do you think you would like to come this year with us?’ He looked like a deer caught in headlights. Zachary says ‘I go it is getting hard for my grandfather to carry the deer out and Jared isn’t getting any younger.’ I say ‘DJ no pressure but I think you would enjoy it. Think about it.’ Stephen says ‘I want to go.’ I tell him when he gets older he can. DJ says ‘I guess I can give it a shot once anyway.’ I tried not to show too much exuberance. Zachary says ‘I think you will like it.’ We ate everyone helped clean up the boys had Klondike bars and DJ left to go home. Stephen went up to take his shower I got a text from Andrea she wanted him in bed by eight. He kind of fussed but told Zachary goodnight and went up. I stayed with him and we talked till he fell asleep. Zachary and I took a shot and showered together again and we both got off good. It is funny after you cum the anxiety and the nerves kick in. It doesn’t pay to get too cocky, but what seemed like an hour we were actually in the shower from start to finish only twenty-five minutes. I say ‘Why the attitude?’ He looks at me and says ‘Papa I have to get up even though I wanted to lay there a little longer Mom says I have to get up at seven or so.’ I looked at him and say. ‘You can tell time now?’ Stephen says ‘Yeah Eric and Stuart helped me and Anthony while we were in Wildwood and the past few days DJ has been practicing with me.’ I say ‘Woohoo good for you.’ I go to give a high five and he gave me a halfhearted one and I grabbed him and hugged him. I whispered ‘Everything will be fine don’t waste your last few days of vacation worrying about anything we are all here for you.’ Stephen says’ Papa DJ told me the same thing and I will.’ We ate and I tell him I will be back in about an hour and he says ‘I may be back by then remember we are going to the dentist.’ I say ‘Go brush your teeth then your Mom will be here soon.’ Anthony says ‘My boys aren’t happy they are moping around.’ I laughed ‘The only one who isn’t happy is Stephen is little Ant old enough for school?’ Anthony says ‘He got in under the wire he will be five in December.’ It hit me then ‘Are they in the same school as my grandsons?’ Anthony says ‘No that is why Ant is kind of bummed. Remember Ian and Jared went to school for a few days here so kind of know kids but not Ant. The only good thing is they are walking it is only two blocks from us. But they will be driven till I feel confident enough.’ I laughed and said ‘It is not like when we were kids. Geez we did a twenty minute walk four times a day in grammar school.’ Anthony says ‘That is right I forgot about that.’ I say ‘Dad brought me to school in kindergarten and I came home with the older kids at lunch it was only half days back then then after that there was a bunch of us who walked but me, Jeff, Jim, and Brian were the ones who lived the furthest away. Even still it wasn’t considered dangerous people were always around. Today you couldn’t do it.’ Anthony asks ‘How far do you think it was?’ I say ‘Not that long ago when Zachary was young I took him for a ride and it was almost two and half miles one way. I left with Brian and Jeff then we went a little further and there was Jim and by the time we got to school there was maybe eight of us that were in the same grade and then there were older siblings either in the same school or the high school we passed. It really wasn’t that bad.’ Anthony says ‘By the time I went we were bussed.’ We got to Cabela’s and I got DJ a great one piece snow suit Çanakkale Escort he could wear hunting and definitely get a few years out of it. Granted it is orange but a manly orange. Anthony got himself a cool Carhart jacket like mine and in I got one for Zachary and DJ and another for myself. I don’t know how warm that letterman jacket will be. We looked for Eric, Stuart and Stephen and Anthony’s boys they didn’t have their sizes but we got them all bib snow pants for the snow. On the way home he told me how Lauretta left Thursday for home but told Charlie she would be back for the fall foliage. Charlie didn’t seem to mind that we all didn’t get together and the two us figured she would be too uncomfortable with it. Hey whatever it is not like we didn’t offer. Anthony asked ‘Have you heard from Marcie?’ I laughed ‘Do you really think I would have?’ Anthony says ‘Actually I thought you would have but I guess she is completely like them.’ I asked ‘Have you?’ Anthony shook his head. I asked ‘Do you want to come for breakfast or coffee?’ He says ‘I got things I have to get done outside and I want to take the boys for pizza early afternoon I figure this will the last hurrah once school starts for them and Becky but I will tomorrow as usual.’ I dropped him off and went home. When I ogt in the kitchen was empty and the same as I left it. I quietly put the bags downstairs and came back up Stephen wasn’t watching TV. I could hear voices coming from upstairs and I crept up. I can see Zachary is still in bed and Stephen is sitting on the bed facing him. They were talking about DJ’s letterman jacket that was hidden in the closet. I backed out and made noise then say ‘Don’t tell me you are still in bed it is after ten.’ Zachary says I’m getting up I’m hungry and Stephen says ‘I’m hungry too.’ I say ‘You must have.’ Stephen says ‘Twice.’ I ask ‘How was the dentist?’ Stephen says ‘Okay we didn’t have any cavities and DJ got his teeth cleaned so he can kiss the girls.’ Both boys sit at the island and give them their oatmeal and toast a couple of muffins. I ask ‘What is the plan for today?’ Zachary says ‘I’m cleaning except for the beds they can wait till tomorrow.’ I ask ‘Stephen how many little bottles do you have home? He answers ‘Twelve I counted them yesterday after I snuck two into DJ’s bag before we came over.’ I say ‘There are only twenty here that is two weeks’ worth. I will buy another twenty tomorrow. Maybe more if they are on sale.’ Stephen got up to give me money and I tell him to wait till after I buy them. I ask ‘Have you decided what we are having for supper besides corn, cucumbers and tomatoes?’ Stephen says ‘Can we have bratwursts?’ I say ‘Sure when did you have them?’ Stephen says ‘In Wildwood and they have to be Johnsonville they are the best.’ I say ‘Well I have to go to the store now to get them. What if they don’t have Johnsonville?’ Stephen looks at me and says ‘Then I want fried shrimp.’ I say ‘Holy crap you know how to eat good.’ I say ‘Okay I will be back in twenty minutes. We will go get the corn later.’ I leave and I hear one of them fart and then laughing. DJ is on his way over and I ask if he wants to take a ride with me and he gets in. DJ says ‘I only have one more day of double sessions that is Monday with school starting Wednesday.’ We are in and out of the store fast and DJ gets some bran muffins his favorite. I tell him not to weed my garden that Stephen will do it with me. We go buy the farm and the corn is out so I stop and get a dozen which is actually fourteen or fifteen depending on the size. When we walk in Stephen and Zachary are still at the island playing tic- tac-toe. Stephen is happy to see DJ. I put the stuff away and I clean the pots DJ shares a muffin with him. DJ and Zachary talk about football and Stephen helps me at the sink. Him and I weed the garden then swim DJ goes home and tells me he will be back for supper. The rest of the weekend flew by. School was not mentioned the rest of the time not even when I walked him home Sunday night. All of Stephen’s gifts actually came in Monday and we got them on the way home from work. DJ and he were swimming when we came home and there were enough tomatoes to make a salad for supper. They want us to go swimming and I tell give us time to get settled. They both say that they ended up winning the tan contest DJ because of his football practice and Stephen staying outside all day. Eric and Stuart have been spending more time inside working on their film and now that Sr. invested in a treadmill they have been doing that instead of running on the street. We sneak the packages in without the boys seeing. Zachary tells me that Noni is making Stephen red velvet cupcakes for his birthday he will be with her this week for lunch and the afternoon. There are half days this week and Eric and Stuart can take of themselves but Stephen would be Maria anyway. While we are in the pool I ask who is staying for supper and Stephen says ‘We can’t ‘Andrea’ wants us home all week for supper so we get ahhh I don’t know what.’ He is getting cranky. DJ says ‘Mom wants us to get on a schedule with her working days now. Eric and Stuart have more chores in the house now.’ I ask amused ‘Like what?’ DJ says ‘They have to check the dishwasher set the table for dinner, make sure they and Stephen change their clothes and empty their lunch boxes and do their homework. Once I am through with football I will be given chores to do and probably watch Stephen.’ Stephen says ‘Papa I thought you said things weren’t going to change.’ I answer ‘Stephen what has changed you can’t wear school clothes to play in you know that and once you get on a schedule I’m positive ‘Andrea’ will let you come for supper a few nights. Now tell me what you guys did today.’ We talked a little and swam for like an hour. The boys left and I got wet hugs and they went home. After I cleaned up outside and brought everything in. Once we got inside we stripped and just threw on tees we knew no one was coming back. I was going through the mail and Zachary was on my lap in an instant. Zachary was little quiet knowing what was going on in his head without looking at him I say ‘Don’t be mooning like Stephen take advantage of our time alone enjoy the quiet. I won’t be surprised if we even see them that long tomorrow if at all.’ Zachary says ‘Maybe we could surprise him and pick him up at school.’ I answer ‘No he will be on the bus with Eric and Stuart. He wasn’t like you or me alone. Anyway on a regular day we all will be getting home at the same time.’ We got through the rest of the night and the following day. I was right when we came home on Tuesday he was on Maria’s porch sitting with her. Zachary and I walked over and Stephen was crabby. I ask ‘What is going on?’ Stephen answers ‘Papa I can’t stay to swim or supper. ‘Andrea wants us all in the house by (he looks at Maria and she says 3:30) yeah 3:30 so we can hear the new rules. Dad is coming home early too.’ I say (trying not to laugh) ‘You better stop calling your Mom ‘Andrea’ she may get mad.’ Stephen laughs ‘She already did she heard DJ and I talking this morning but she laughed and told me I’ll give you ‘Andrea’ right on the both of your butts.’ I say ‘Listen the sooner you guys do what they want the quicker things will go back to normal. Hey tomorrow is your birthday and I’m not going to wait to the weekend to celebrate it.’ That perked Stephen right up. I say ‘Maybe we can have a little party before supper.’ Wednesday morning Andrea and Maria walked the three boys to the bus stop. DJ had left earlier and Eric and Stuart kept some distance between themselves and the women. Maria was telling Zachary this she called him at work as soon as she got home. Maria told him how he looked like he wanted to cry when the bus came but he didn’t. She went on to say that as soon as the bus left Andrea and she cried on the way home. What surprised both of them was that Eric took Stephen by the arm and helped him on the bus and they could see that he sat with him. So hopefully the rest of the day went okay. Maria says she will call after they come home if she can. Andrea hasn’t called me and I will wait to hear from her. Zachary says to me at lunch ‘I have to admit I was kind of anxious for Stephen.’ I say ‘I know that that is why I didn’t bring it up I was expecting a call to come home myself.’ Maria texted Zachary that Andrea and she walked to the bus stop Stephen was in better spirits when he got off the bus. This time he was sitting with someone from his class but got off with Eric and Stuart so far no other kindergartener was at their stop. Maria told Andrea she had no problem meeting the bus or walking him, Andrea told her maybe but she wanted Eric and Stuart to shoulder some responsibility. Andrea went on to say once these boys have afternoon events if you don’t mind that would be great. I say ‘Maria needs that so she can see him every day.’ Zachary went on to say Stephen went home to change and nap and said ‘only to rest his eyes’ then he was coming over. When we got home no one was on the porch and I thought maybe he was on my deck but Zachary says ‘He wouldn’t be alone, DJ has practice.’ The two us started our chores and the house phone rang and it was Stephen telling us to come over to Noni’s. I took one of the jackets and Zachary just brought The Santa Clause trilogy we would give him the other jackets Sunday. Inside the ‘prince’ was sitting at the table having a bowl of barley soup. We kept the gifts hidden. I ask ‘How was your first day?’ Stephen looks at me and says ‘It was alright. There are a few kids from my class that take the bus but no one gets off here but that is okay they are already on the bus when I get on and I get off first.’ I ask ‘Did your brothers bother you?’ Stephen says ‘Stuart was kind of a jerk but Eric helped me get on the bus he made me sit with him and his friends and made sure I found my room. Papa I think he has a girlfriend.’ I ask ‘What makes you say that?’ He answers ‘There was this girl sitting in front and she turned around and says to Eric ‘Is this your brother?’ and Eric nodded and she smiled at him and says that was cool he was watching out for him and then tells him I will see you in class and handed him a note then smiles at me and says ‘Hi Eric’s brother.’ Zachary says ‘What was in the note?’ Stephen says ‘Duh I can’t read that much and I couldn’t see it. But Eric got a stupid smile on his face.’ Maria and I both laughed hard and Stephen looked at us and rolled his eyes. Zachary says ‘What is your teacher’s name? and what did you do for four whole hours?’ Stephen says ‘Her name is Miss Burns and she is young almost as young as you. She called our names and made us sit at desks one after another in rows. She said ‘We are going to learn numbers and colors and letters. Oh Papa there was a boy almost as big as me he was crying when his Mom left he sits behind me some kids were laughing and I told him that they are wieners I have a brother that is like them. That made him laugh and I asked him ‘If he wanted to be friends and he said yes.’ Zachary asks ‘What is his name?’ Stephen says ‘It is Jacob.’ I say ‘See you already got a friend.’ Stephen says ‘Yeah he seems okay. I sat with him on the way home and he gets off after me.’ Maria brought out four big cupcakes with a candle in one. We all sang Happy Birthday he was surprised. We all had a cupcake she told him there were four more, two would be for his afternoon snack and if he wanted he could take two to school to share. Stephen says ‘I will only take one to school to share with Jacob and I will bring the other one home for DJ.’ Maria got two containers to put them in. Now came the presents. Maria gave him two sweaters and two rugby shirts. Zachary followed giving him the dvds and then I followed with the denim jacket and a hat. He tried everything on and was happy. It was about 5:00 and Andrea called for him to come home that supper would be ready soon. He kissed Maria goodbye and she told him she will see in the morning. He hugged Zachary and I walked him home with his presents and cupcakes. DJ was in from practice and setting the table the other two boys were in their room doing homework. Stephen showed DJ and Andrea his presents and he gave the cupcake to DJ. DJ says ‘I will split it with you after supper.’ Andrea told me the party for both boys will be Saturday afternoon and it will be just us, her mother-in-law and Maria and Mario. I give Stephen a hug and tell him Happy Birthday again and leave. Maria wanted us to stay for supper and we did seeing we had done nothing at home only the laundry. Mario came in and we talked bocce there were two more weeks and that would be it. We didn’t have to play tonight because the other team forfeited. Maria had barley soup, an egg, potato, squash frittata, stuffed squash, and a tomato and cucumber salad and for dessert biscotti which Zachary and I passed on after the cupcakes. Mario wanted to know about Stephen’s first day and Maria filled him in. Mario laughed ‘There will never be any flies on that boy.’ While Zachary helped his grandmother clean up I told Mario about the hunting one piece suit I got DJ and how he is willing to give it a try this year. Zachary says ‘I have someone to help me.’ Mario says ‘He may get one himself you know beginners luck.’ I say ‘All that meat won’t go to waste.’ We left a little while later to go home. Zachary got our gym gear ready as I did our lunches. Zachary grabbed me by the hand and took me upstairs. The bed in his room was all ready for us. Zachary pulled down the shade and I took him in my arms. We kissed and slowly undressed down to our white socks. We got onto the bed and lay side by side. He was rubbing my arm and leaned over to kiss me. Zachary got on his back completely and nudged me to get on him. Our kisses got my intense.
