As usual Luke took advantage of this, but I knew that Liam would complain if I didn’t attend to his feet. All too soon Kori called a halt to the proceedings. Now I love Kori dearly, but does he have to be so bossy? Of course he does. I repeat, I love Kori dearly. It was just the three of us again this morning and I worked with a will to get Dusty’s stall cleaned out. Sure enough all three horses got ridden this morning with Kori leading Dusty but instructing me to use my legs, backside and hands to let Dusty know what I wanted from him. I was sure that the horse must be confused, trying to read signals from two different people, since Kori still had his head, but Dusty was an incredibly patient horse and showed that he was enjoying the experience. When I dismounted I told Dusty how pleased I was and there was a two way conversation as he told me how pleased he was. In no time Kori, Liam and I were stripped and racing for the shower. There was plenty of warm water, plenty of our favourite strawberry shampoo, lots of feeling each other up, and plenty of horseplay but, above all, plenty of laughter. Yes I know “Breakfast” doesn’t normally have a capital letter, but it does when Kori is making it. By the time Kori had prepared bacon, eggs, beans, mushrooms, sausage and hash browns, and Liam had produced a mountain of toast, other people were showering and dressing. Since the Professor and Ian would be leaving in the morning, he proposed that we throw a party for them tonight. Will it take long to do it?” “I can’t do it”, he said. “I looked at the layout they’ve chosen, and it isn’t my layout. I’ve no idea whose it is but somebody has redrawn one of my layouts in their own hand. I didn’t notice it when I photographed it, but it quite clearly isn’t my work”. “You’re the only artist around here” I said. “We don’t go in Jake’s office”, said Liam. “What’re you looking at me for?” said Sammy. “I’m not”, replied Jonah. “Luke, come here please”. The poor boy looked as if he was about to faint. The blood had drained from his face and he was trembling as he stood and stepped forward. He was clearly unable to speak. Jonah reached out and pulled him into a hug that was more about preventing him from falling over than anything else. “I should have realised there wasn’t anybody else could draw like you can”, Jonah said. “It’s alright, you didn’t do anything wrong. It was my fault anyway. By the time we returned to the minibus we had paper plates and plastic cups, we had salad and we had fruit. We had ice cream and we had Jello. We had slab cake – sorry we had sheet cake – I forgot this is America. We had balloons and bunting and we had lots of assorted liquor from Appletize to Vimto. Ah yes, that’s a comprehensive range but it doesn’t get as far as vodka, and it includes neither beer nor whisky. I know many of our guests are adults but, if they don’t know how bad alcohol can be, Liam does. Yes the alcohol ban was not in deference to our Methodist principles, but to Liam’s past, and we were confident that not a single guest would dissent. Laden with all this treasure we returned to Jake’s house. We de-booted in the mudroom and Luke entered the house deliberately behind me. Jonah greeted us. “Ah, you’re back,” he said. “Simon, can you come with me a minute? You too Luke. Jake, if you can spare a minute, I’d like you to come too.” We followed him to Jake’s office and he sat us all down. “Luke, ” he said, “it’s important that I have a word with you. As your father it’s my job to look after your interests, but at the moment your interests and mine might clash, so I’ve asked your step-brother and our friend to be here to make sure I put your interests first. I won’t ask if you understand, becauseI know you don’t, but I hope you will in a minute. OK?” Luke nodded. “Good”, Jonah continued. ” Now I’ve spoken to the chief executive of Pillips-Murchisson, the company I came to America to work with, and he insists that he will only accept the layout that you drew and two other layouts similar to mine but with the alterations that you made to the other one and with your artwork. Now I can’t supply him with any of that”. “You’ve got one of them” Luke said. “But he will only accept all three,” said Jonah,”and I haven’t got one of them. He’s trying to tell you the best way to sell things to his company, but he doesn’t even know yet whether you want to sell anything to them. ” Luke nodded, “I’ve seen the other two sheets,” he said. “I think I could do a better job”. “I guess that’s me told” muttered Jonah. “Well before you accept any offer from your father,” Jake told him,” I’d suggest you have a talk with Mr. Ito, Garret’s father. He’s a businessman and has had advertisers work for him before. Ask him what his company would have been prepared to pay for something like that.” Luke looked at Jonah but I grabbed his shoulder. “Don’t ask Jonah”, I told him. ” He works for your customer. What do you think Luke?” “Isn’t Mr. Ito coming tonight?” Luke asked. “Yes my boy”. “Then I can see him then”, he said, “When do I start?” “Well that’s up to you Luke, ” said Jonah, “after all, you’re self-employed, and you know where the layouts are”. “Well, if you two have settled all your business for today, ” said Jake, “Ian has made sandwiches and then we’ve got a lot to do before teatime.” “I have” said Luke, “so I’ll be out of your way most of the afternoon. ” “Oh yes”, said Jonah, “did you get it?” Luke nodded. “Good boy” said Jonah.
